Last October, Ashlee Simpson was caught using a vocal guide at a live taping of Saturday Night Live in New York City. Her fans and the media turned on her, conjuring up memories of Milli Vanilli lipsynching to their demise over a decade ago. Now the industrial/futurepop outfit VNV Nation can relate after a similar mishap at a warm-up show last night. Gearing up for the Formation Tour set to kick off in May; VNV Nation was to play an unannounced set in London, England. Fans expected to get a taste of their new album Matter + Form but the band encountered problems with the first song in their set. When frontman Ronan Harris announced the first song as “Chrome,” a recording began playing 'Joy' from Praise the Fallen. A confused Harris broke into a jig and ran off the stage frantically. The sound engineer from the venue confirms that a backing tape was used which incidentally sounded remarkably similar to VNV Nation’s studio recordings. Harris later blamed the use of the alleged backing tape on the high energy level he must exude on stage. His endless prancing and frolicking is prone to leaving him out of breath, necessitating a vocal guide. Whether or not this will have any effect on the upcoming U.S. tour is unknown.

I really don't know that this was a joke. For example on CP 2004 Clan of Xymox plays whole gig from tape except vocal, I saw them morning on concert day on their practices. Many bands uses backing tapes, especially this well known ones and especially from industrial and electro genre, cause there is too many equipment to take to the stage. It's phisically impossible, so they must use backing tapes. So I think it's isn't a joke (but everything is possible :))
