We had a chance to interview the organiser of the Castle Party – Krzysztof Rakowski.

DN: Castle Party has a long tradition and it’s the oldest festival of this kind in Poland. How did it start? Whose idea it was to organise such an event?

KR: The bands that played at the first edition. We organized it at the castle in Grodziec for ourselves, we just wanted to play at such a beautiful place. It all worked out and now part of the staff that took part in organising the first festival still helps with it.

DN: The Castle Party Festival is the biggest event of this kind in Poland. Last year a similar festival was held in the north of Poland but it turned out that it wasn’t enough to invite a couple of famous artists for the event to be successful. Not so long ago another festival was to be organised in my home city – Lodz. Unfortunately, because of, among others, low turnout, it was cancelled. What is the secret of Castle Party’s success, why are you always successful?

KR: Because it’s a great event, it’s a fun-oriented party at the castle. Probably it’s just the formula that worked out. We’re reliable, we really like what we do and it works. We invite people to have fun and we’re not the only ones. But it seems that we do it right. We like what we do. But you can’t forget that it is the audience and the bands that create the atmosphere of the party, we just provide them with the conditions. We just give them an attractive offer.

DN: Some controversial bands appear often at the festival. Such was the case of Cool Kids Of Death and Sweet Noise, so I’d like to ask why Renata Przemyk?

KR: They’re good bands, they play interesting music, they’re popular and people want to see them. Both bands played an encore, so there must have been an audience for this kind of music at the castle. And Renata Przemyk is a very interesting, intriguing, eccentric artist, just right for the Castle Party, she creates unique music. And she has lots of fans. Her concert may turn out to be one of the most important events. We always take such criteria into consideration when we make a choice.

DN: It’s widely known that some mainstream stars (and not only them) have their caprices and weird whims. Have you met some strange demands and if so, could you let us in on this secret?

KR: Different things happen but artist have a right to unconventional behaviour and requests. We respect it and we try to satisfy their needs. It’s our adventure, there’s nothing to discuss here, we should keep it to ourselves. However, it may sometimes be burdensome. Sometimes it’s really difficult, but what matters is the festival, so we turn the blind eye. Most troublesome are the bands that drink a lot. We try to arrange the rest before the festival.

DN: Is there any band that have never played at the Castle Party and which you’d like to invite?

KR: Yes, of course, there are many such bands but the reality is as it is. We sometimes just can’t afford them or the bands can’t come for various other reasons. But everything’s before us. Each year we start from the beginning and the situation changes. But let’s do nothing by force. We have already had to resign a few times from the concert of an artist we wanted to invite just because it wasn’t the right time, but next year it may be different.

DN: What are your predictions about the future of the festival? What is the direction CP should follow? Should there be more electronic or gothic and gothic metal music?

KR: We’ve never made such assumptions, they mean nothing. They have to be bands people want to see and whether it will be electronic or guitar music will turn out later. Our “dark independent” market is not very big, so every year the situation changes. The audience of the festival have already got used to listening here various interesting bands and we’re not going to change it.

DN: Is there any chance of seeing at the festival in the future bands making less typical and dance music, such as Deutsch Nepal or other projects by e.g. Cold Metal Industry?

KR: Of course, but you have to remember that this is a summer party at the castle and not everything works on the sunlit stage. But like I’ve already said, each year the situation changes. We try to invite different bands each year.

DN: Would you like to tell anything the people who’ll go to the festival? What do the Bolków inhabitants think of the festival and the participants?

KR: It’s an annual party for everyone, a feast for the music fans and the city inhabitants. Bolków is a small, quiet place that once a year becomes a European freaks’ capital. I’d like them to have as much fun as in the previous years, or even better than that – let them shed all their inhibitions. It’s a three-day carnival, so have fun and let the others have fun as well. Even if they look a bit different from you. And leave the matter of safety to us.

See you at the castle.
