The album I received lately from the French artist Antoine and his project TAT falls into category which is sometimes labelled as ethereal wave. However TAT project creator states his music as the darkfolk , I would call that particular piece dark neoclassical ethereal wave with elements of noir folk.....
The album ‘QUINTA ESSENTIA’ is a concept album with main instrumental , inherent theme. The base is formed with the classic guitar and a sequencer and by the use of those two the artist managed to create fantastic soundscape of mood, emotion and melancholy. Mixed with a little of medieval influences, new twists and deep, haunting vocals ( both male and female) it creates a remarkable , theatrical atmosphere. The atmosphere suitable for an ancient, distinguished vampire, perhaps a little tormented and haunted by the ghosts of past and passing years, full of myths and long forgotten beliefs. The picture we get is celestial , hazy, esoteric, the music flows smoothly, romantically, the voice rises and falls amid a forest of strings. Antoine does not sing in fact, he recites his verses in a deep, gloomy voice, not to say vampiric, infernal. The female voice presented by Esclarmonde in ‘Rian Iridiagmar’, ‘Vampyr’ and ‘The Emerald Tablet’ intertwines gracefully with its softness and delicacy with the fierce male’s.
All 10 tracks we are presented with are full of harmony, consistent, sinister, a little occultish and folkish. The last one, however contains electronic beat, which is a bit surprising and therefore sounds faster. It sounds like the very last cry of the vampire who knows his time is about to end.
‘QUINTA ESSENTIA’ seems designed for good late nightlistening, only then you are able to appreciate its mood in full.
Last , but not least, the album is available for free from TAT’s website ( http://tat.darkfolk.free.fr/ ), so you can download it without violating artist’s rights. It seems a good idea when you can’t get it in your own country. If you can, however, buy the original CD as your money will not be wasted.
