At last Siouxsie has released her long-rumoured solo album; Mantaray has been available worldwide since the beginning of October 2007.
Iconic Punk Queen , Ice Queen , Punk - Goth – Rock Priestess, whatever name you called her you are about to reveal yet another face of the diva. When well – known artists appear under new names or solo projects it stirs a great deal of curiosity about how and why people choose to present themselves, are they merely retracing their footsteps selling us the good old tunes, or trying something totally new and fresh , full of invention and surprise enough to enjoy yet another time ?
Mantaray is anything but these; not a comeback, , yet not innovative enough to be a milestone in music entertainment. Why bother then, you might ask… I am about to give a few good reasons as to why you might be interested in new Siouxsie.
That woman is the legend , the beloved icon , fully fledged a one-name star who outwitted all speculations by not trying too hard to make a case for her popularity. And she is really pop, from the first track of the record. She delivers grand , glammy, Goldfrap-like piece of music, a little synth neo gothic, if you prefer. She managed to free herself from her iconic image as though she understands being Ice Queen is not enough in our demanding times. This sense of freedom , so much more expansive than in her previous work, lets her swirl smoothly through the tracks, making it thrilling experience fro listeners.
Musically she moves between heavier industrial rhythms ( brilliant ‘Into a swan’ ) through modern glam ( ‘It’s about to happen, ‘Here comes that day’) into electronic, hypnotic (‘ Sea of tranquilty’ or ‘Drone Zone’), producing as though by pure chance such excellent James Bond –y tracks like ‘If that doesn’t kill you’.
Ice Queen has melted , the queen is more human , showing warmth that would not have been accepted in the 80’, but suits year 2007.This is Siouxsie ‘s re-invention, evolution in her musical journey,. That may not sweep you right out of your chair, but is captivating enough to leave you pleased and comforted. The artist voice is her great asset ;strong , witchy at times, commanding , spooky or comforting when needed. Siouxsie navigates with grace and professionalism between pop , rock , glam rock, jazz –tingles arrangements and gothic tunes.
It is a really kaleidoscopic turning of musical visions and should feed fans nicely.
